The exhibition at the Petit Palais, which moves on to the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, in February 2027, is the first-ever major exhibition devoted to Eva Gonzalès (1847–1883).

Unlike contemporaries such as Mary Cassatt or Berthe Morisot, Eva Gonzalès has never had a retrospective exhibition dedicated to her work. She is regularly included among the female Impressionists, although she was never really part of that group, and her work clearly has a distinctive feel.

Eva Gonzalès was Édouard Manet’s only pupil, and she had a very special artistic relationship with him. With support from her family, she managed to carve out a path for herself in a century when women faced significant barriers to success in the world of  art.

The aim of this exhibition is to introduce the public to an artist who is all too often perceived as a secondary figure in the history of art, and to celebrate the role of the three individuals who helped to nurture her talent and ensure the enduring legacy of her work: Jeanne Gonzalès, her sister; Henri Guérard, her husband; and, above all, Édouard Manet, the master she chose for herself and who passed on his ideas about innovative painting. To exhibit Eva Gonzalès today – a recognised yet relatively little-known painter – is to retrace the short life of an artist who was surrounded by a loving circle of family and friends; so the exhibition gives prominence to her private life and the light-hearted yet determined manner in which she developed her body of work. The exhibition also offers a few points of comparison with works by other painters of the period – Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt and Marie Bracquemond. These contrasts provide a better understanding of the trajectories of these women, their circumstances as artists, the subjects they tackled, and the critical context in which their works were received.

This exhibition is organised in collaboration with the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and with the exceptional support of the Musée d’Orsay.
