The Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris is presenting a major retrospective of work by Lebanese-American artist Simone Fattal, born 1942 in Damascus, and resident in Paris for many years now. A tireless explorer of materials and techniques, Simone Fattal's multifaceted body of work draws on a wide range of literary, mythological and historical sources.

Her remarkable career began in the Middle East where, inspired by the landscapes around Beirut, she took up painting. But in 1980, the war in Lebanon drove her to leave the country along with her partner, the artist and poet Etel Adnan (1925–2021). The couple settled in Sausalito, near San Francisco, where Simone Fattal established the publishing house Post-Apollo Press, publishing mainly feminist poetry and experimental writing. Then, at the turn of the 1990s, she returned to the visual arts and began working in ceramics. Her archaic, anthropomorphic or animal-like figures were inspired by the mythology of the Mediterranean basin. Alongside sculpture and collages, painting re-emerged in the 2010s, accompanied by works on paper: watercolours and black-ink drawings inspired by calligraphy or natural motifs.

This is Fattal's first exhibition in a Parisian museum. She is a profoundly original artist and a free spirit in every sense of the term. The show pays tribute to the range and creativity of her still-evolving body of work.
