Musée Cognac-Jay - Exhibition Révéler le Féminin
Women in the mirror: appearances and fantasy / UNTIL SEPTEMBER 20TH 2026

About This Experience
In collaboration with the Palais Galliera, the Musée Cognacq-Jay explores the diversity of depictions of women in the 18th century. By juxtaposing actual garments with paintings, prints and drawings, the exhibition highlights the close relationship between costume and self-image. The history of dress and its depiction during the Age of Enlightenment describes both a material reality and a mental construct: these are the two aspects that the exhibition explores through portraits as well as pastoral scenes and fêtes galantes. The new French style, which was gaining popularity in European courts and cities alike, was expressed in portraits of the aristocracy and the urban upper middle class. By bringing together paintings and clothing of the period, the exhibition offers a reflection on the way femininity was projected in the 18th century - a cross between social expectations and an idealised image of beauty.
