The Marais is also the neighbourhood traditionally associated with the Jewish community, even though it actually comprises just a few streets. The Jewish population has long been settled throughout the Greater Paris area and is no longer confined to the traditional ‘pletzl’.

The tour will follow the present and past traces of the Jewish community in the neighbourhood, taking in streets and shops, synagogues and discreet prayer rooms. In particular, the famous one built in the Art Nouveau style by Guimard, the designer of Paris’s metro stations. The tour will also highlight – without actually visiting them – two superb museums, one dedicated to Jewish history and art in France, and the other to the Holocaust. Not to mention several unknown and hidden ‘treasures’, as well as a wealth of diverse and surprising anecdotes.

Whilst a visit to a synagogue is normally included, it may be cancelled at the last minute by the site’s management for religious or health reasons.

The tour will provide an opportunity to reflect on the current situation of the Jewish community in France, as well as the changing face of the neighbourhood. Indeed, with ever-increasing numbers of tourists, clothing shops are taking precedence over traditional local businesses.
